Commentary: Why we’re fascinated by Susan Boyle

April 23rd, 2009 >> Susan Boyle News

NEW YORK (CNN) — Susan Boyle, who recently performed on the U.K. television show “Britain’s Got Talent,” has captured the world’s attention.

In case you’ve missed it, she’s a 47-year-old unemployed charity worker who lives with her cat in a small village in Scotland.

As soon as she walked on stage, the audience began to snicker and roll their eyes. Simon Cowell, the show’s host, asked her some pre-performance questions in his famously condescending style, and to the audience’s enjoyment, she answered awkwardly.

She was painfully ordinary, and everyone was prepared, looking forward even, to see her fail.

By now, if you don’t know the story, you could guess it, right? She more than wowed them. She opened her mouth to sing, and, as judge Piers Morgan later said, she had “the voice of an angel.”

Interview: The prime of Miss Susan Boyle

April 23rd, 2009 >> Susan Boyle News

STORM CLOUDS are forming over Susan Boyle’s house. It’s Tuesday afternoon and the weather has turned cold on this small council estate in the West Lothian village of Blackburn where, 12 days ago, a star was not so much born as made.
At the front gate, a man from the council is building a new fence, behind which several reporters and press photographers hover. They look anxious, huddled against the wind, hopeful even for a momentary glance of the unemployed, 48-year-old local who is, apparently, ‘bigger than Obama’.

It is not easy to get an interview with Susan Boyle now. In fact, it may be easier to get an interview with Barack Obama. The Scotsman has been trying to speak to her since 10 April, the day the first stories appeared about a middle-aged Scottish woman who had apparently impressed Simon Cowell during the Glasgow audition of Britain’s Got Talent, which was due to be aired on ITV1 the following night.

Susan Boyle Joked About Never Being Kissed

April 23rd, 2009 >> Susan Boyle News

Britain’s Got Talent singer Susan Boyle may not be as naive as she would have us believe.

The 47-year-old spinster told viewers of the U.K. TV talent show that she lived alone, had a cat called Pebbles, and had “never been kissed.”

But it wasn’t true.

Boyle, who has competed in countless talent shows, used the line to curry favor with the audience. She told a TV interviewer from U.K. breakfast show GMTV, “That was made as a joke! Never been kissed? I’ve never stopped.”

The blogosphere has lit up at the news.

“Angel or crazy for publicity? You decide,” was how fan site CafeArjun.com responded. “I’m forced to believe it was all a planned show!”

Susan Boyle starting on the makeover

April 22nd, 2009 >> Susan Boyle News

These photos of Susan Boyle rocking a cute little dress and a hip leather jacket will no doubt have some folks crying “blashphemy!” Ever since the Britain’s Got Talent video of the frumpy, bushy-eyebrowed, never-been-kissed Boyle singing angelically first hit the Web a week and a half ago, many among the sobbing masses have lamented an inevitable post-stardom makeover. Few will blame the sweet Scottish songbird herself but will instead blame a ruthless, unfair entertainment industry that forced a woman with a hidden inner beauty to succumb to a plastic, cookie-cutter standard of external beauty.

The 48-year-old recorded two songs ten years ago and distributed them to only a handful of her closest friends in the village of Blackburn, West Lothian, where she lives alone with her cat.

The recording, which was unearthed by Telegraph.co.uk, features two songs – an early version of the blues ballad Cry Me a River and Killing Me Softly with His Song, the track immortalised by Roberta Flack in 1973.

Last week the Daily Record newspaper in Scotland uncovered Miss Boyle’s first CD recording – a version of Cry Me a River recorded for a millenium charity compilation CD at Whitburn Academy.

Britain’s Got Talent stars Susan Boyle and Paul Potts duet?

Posted by: Biggest Fan

April 22nd, 2009 >> Susan Boyle News

Susan Boyle may have never had a boyfriend, but she could soon have a singing partner.

At least if Simon Cowell has anything to do with it.

Cowell is reportedly scheming to pair the British singing songbird with another “Britain’s Got Talent” sensation and YouTube success story: salesman-turned-singer Paul Potts.

Cowell, the acidic judge behind both “American Idol” and “Britain’s Got Talent,” – where the world met both Boyle and Potts – thinks a pairing has great musical potential.

Cowell is already planning a film called “Star Struck” based on Potts’ immediate rise to fame.

Susan Boyle: Has the world been conned?

VANCOUVER – Whaddaya mean there’s no Santa Claus?!

It’s worse than that. Internet sensation Susan Boyle, who garnered at least 30 million YouTube views with her Cinderella performance on Britain’s Got Talent, is a player in a giant fraud.

Or is she? She can surely sing, as evidenced by the tears that flooded the world as the plain Scottish lass sang the Les Miz hit I Dreamed a Dream.

Suddenly, the 47-year-old virgin became everybody’s sweetheart; the kind that brings warmth in the middle of a frosty recession. Broke and jobless? “I know, Andy, we’ll put on a show!”

And a show did talent curmudgeon Simon Cowell surely put on. Or was it crusty Cowell’s put-on?
